Ashland University has welcomed back alum Jamie Lindholm by featuring her painting exhibition in the Coburn Art Gallery. The work is titled “An Evolution from Imagery to Entanglement”, and is open for viewing to the public until Sunday, Oct. 29.
“The paintings represent the entanglements of places, subjects, memories and metaphor and all their simultaneous existence,” Lindholm states on her website.
Lindholm obtained a degree in business management and marketing from AU in 1983. Soon after graduating, she progressed through various art programs and ended up procuring a Master of Fine Arts with honors through Regis University in Denver. Her work has been featured in New York, New Jersey, Switzerland, Australia, and Sweden.
“She’s actually our second alum featured in the gallery here that graduated with a marketing degree,” said Cynthia Petry, Coburn Gallery director.
AU finds importance in bringing back alumni as it can inspire current and future students. Lindholm’s work was chosen to be featured due to its advanced imagery and use of oils and charcoal to depict emotional experiences.
“The use of colors reflected a strong sense of optimism, especially in the American eagle defense of liberty painting,” said Dr. Dave McCoy, chair of the department of Journalism and Digital Media.
Lindholm is a signature member of the American Women Artists, a non-profit organization designed to emphasize women in the visual fine arts. She was also the former National Coordinator of the Ambassador Program of the Portrait Society of America.
“Her work offers a glimpse into not just imagery, but also the process of making the work using something that some people might just see as a grid,” Petry explained. ”When in fact, that grid was much more complicated with the message of the work.”
The Coburn Gallery aims to feature alumni and their work every four to six years, as the importance of putting former students on display is growing. Students and faculty at AU as well as residents in the Ashland area are able to show support by attending shows and purchasing work.
“There are lots of connections that everyone can make with the work right into their own lives, in the way we see the world around us,” Petry said.
Lindholm currently works from her studio in the Denver-Boulder area, and her artwork can be found for viewing and purchase at her website, jamielindholm.com
