On August 14, an email sent out by public relations stated that the DEI Center would be receiving a name change, and the name would be announced later this fall.

“Last year, there was a presidential committee that I ended up serving on that worked on renaming it,” said Alex Hill, Interim Director of the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusive Excellence. “They had a proposal that they took to the board.”

There was some student feedback over concerns about the name change, so the committee wanted more student feedback regarding the name being redeveloped.

“One thing that we were trying to do is create a name that doesn’t set people off, but it also it captures the work that we do,” said Hill.

According to Hill, some proposals will be in place soon to “slightly restructure the office” for more collaborative work.

The goal of the new name is to create a more welcoming name to serve all students on campus.

This is a developing story.
