The Ashland University football team has continued its stellar play throughout the season dumping off opponents at the curb in route to a 7-0 undefeated record.

The Eagles look to Saturday, Oct. 29, to continue the long-lasting legacy of the “Traveling Trophy” against the Hillsdale Chargers on the road.

Coming off of a 28-20 tight-knit victory over the Tiffin Dragons, Head Coach Lee Owens was impressed with his team’s performance.

“It was a good win for us,” said Owens. “Two challenging games back-to-back at home. We have some issues to clean up but they [The Eagles] played extremely hard.”

The Eagles saw running back Larry Martin continued his dominant run attack against the Dragons. He put up 124 yards through 27 attempts and also punched the ball into the endzone two times.

Outside of Martin the offense saw starting quarterback Austin Brenner continue to rebound from his season-ending injury last season, wideout Garrett Turnbaugh haul in five catches for 115 yards and wideout Logan Bolin throw for 48 yards and receive for 50.

“Turnbaugh jumped off the paper for us. Another 100-yard receiving game,” said Owens. “What we ended up doing was giving the game ball to Larry [Martin]. With Geivonni Washington being inactive he’s turned up his game and gotten more reps.”

Defensively, the two captains Michael Ayers and Jourdan Swett combined for 14 tackles and a tackle for loss.

Although the Eagles gave up 20 points, their defense sits at No. 5 in the nation in points given up per contest at 10.71.

In rushing defense, they sit at No. 25 giving up roughly 90 per contest and in passing they sit at No. 7 allowing just a 92.76 quarterback efficiency rating.

With the Eagles being ranked as one of the best in the nation, the Hillsdale Chargers aren’t that close in reputation.

The Chargers currently sit at a record of 4-4 on the season and 3-3 in conference play. Throughout their last four competitions, they won just one, coming against the Northwood Timberwolves.

Last week against the Findlay Oilers the Chargers fell 41-20. They turned the ball over just one time, but failed to convert on 11 third-down opportunities and converted just once.

While the offense struggled, the real hit came on defense as they allowed 207 rushing yards and 184 passing yards. Four touchdowns were scored by the Oiler rushing attack, with the longest touchdown going for 71 yards to the house.

Charger punter Luke Keller had a busy day punting 10 times for over 400 yards.

If the Chargers want a shot at upsetting the No. 6 team in the country, they need to address a lot of inconsistencies on both sides of the ball.

With confidence brewing and the season continuing, the Eagles will look to capitalize on their hot play.

“As long as we keep winning, good things will happen,” said Owens. “All our dreams are right there in front of us. It’s time to win number eight.”

Tomorrow’s kickoff from Hillsdale College is expected at 1 p.m. at Frank “Muddy” Waters Stadium.
