Another Successful Year of New Members For Fraternity and Sorority Life Formal Recruitment

Theta Phi Alpha welcomes home new members

Bid Day is the last day of formal recruiting for Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) where active members of Ashland University FSL chapters offer invitations to potential new members. Bid Day is also a time for celebration for many in the FSL community.

According to John Miller, FSL intern and Five Star chair, the core of Bid Day is “To welcome home new members where everyone is excited to see the start to their journey in FSL.”

One of the main events for Bid Day is the “running home” of new sorority members, where the new member takes multi-colored confetti and throws it into the air representing the chapter they have chosen to join. This is then followed by the embrace of their fellow members.

Fraternity chapters often have a similar event where they will show their chapter’s Bid Day event shirt off on stage and run back to their new brothers in the chapter. The chapter the new members choose is kept secret until this point.

FSL has different requirements and recruiting events. Each chapter on campus is individualized for what their chapter represents and internalizes.

After the recruitment events and requirements have been met, many of the fraternity or sorority presidents will get together with the rest of the members and take a vote on the potential new members and if they would make a good fit for the chapter. After the vote is taken, the potential new member will receive an email detailing that they have received a bid from the fraternity or sorority and it is the potential new member’s choice to accept or not. Once the bid is accepted, they are invited to the celebration of Bid Day.
