The design for the new library cafe located on the campus of Ashland University.

With many changes coming to Ashland University, the new installation of the library cafe could come with the potential to serve alcohol on campus.

Ashland University is not a dry campus, but is actually a “moist campus” according to Dr. Carlos Campo, president of Ashland University.

Basically, a moist campus is a mixture between dry and wet.

“Serving alcohol in a campus library would be a problem,” said Campo. “We would need board approval for that … It’s certainly something we’re considering.”

According to Matt Portner, executive director of Auxiliary Services, the possibility of alcohol is being discussed but it is still too early to say because the liquor license has not been filed yet.

Currently, the talks of alcohol in the library cafe are still up in the air, but there are a few different possibilities being discussed if alcohol goes into the library cafe.

Campo mentioned the idea of flipping the cafe at night.

“So at 5:00 o’clock we flip it to where we would shift it to more of an evening menu and maybe at 5 opening it up,” said Campo.

This would allow for another location to be available to the community and a place for professors and students of legal age to relax and unwind.

Even though the debate of alcohol being in the library cafe is still up in the air, it is confirmed that food will be available in the new library cafe.

Specialty baked goods, toasts, brewed coffees, tea, and grab and go items are some of the options that are being considered for the new library cafe at the moment, according to Portner.

Also, currently they are working with other partners in the community like Vines and Goldberry Coffee, to potentially put their items into the cafe.

The cafe is part of phase one of the library renovation and is estimated to be completed by the end of the 2023 spring semester.
