The Ashland Eagles football team has entered the second week of their spring training season in preparation for the spring game on April 9. The game will conclude the fall schedule for the team and will be featuring a draft of the players to two teams. The majority of the game will be showcasing the younger players and transfers which will give viewers a look into the promising future of the football program.
“We have a lot of young talent and a lot of guys eager to just get out there and be part of this team,” said Defensive Backs coach Dominic Orsini.
Coach Orsini is happy with how his team has been able to progress during spring training thanks to the indoor Niss Athletic Center.
“It has really been a blessing because last year our guys didn’t have this space to practice when it was snowing out or pouring rain during the spring season so we weren’t able to do a lot of the things that we are doing now with the drills and scrimmages.
Orsini also mentioned that in terms of morale, the facility has done wonders for the team.
“It has given the guys a sense of pride like yeah we have this amazing space to be in and are one of the only Division 2 programs who can offer that,” Orsini Said.
Head Coach Lee Owens has also mentioned multiple times throughout the spring season how the indoor facility has really been a game changer for the team.
“I am just so thankful for our beautiful facilities. You know, we have been able to do a lot here this spring and have seen guys really excited to get in here and get after it during our days of training” Owens said.
Coaches and players alike have been ecstatic about the facility and opportunity to really get the workload they want, but have all agreed and stated that it is all about player health and making the right decisions to boost your success in the fall.
“Spring camp is a opportunity to make those mistakes that you never want to see in fall and learn from them but at the end of the day it is only the spring and you don’t want to walk away from the day not being able to take a snap in the fall due to an injury you might pick up at practice weather you were slacking off or something just happening you just have to make sure sure you see those fall snaps” Said Sophomore Wide receiver Jake Mcloughlin.
The team has full practices on Tuesday and Thursday and have a scrimmage on Saturday every week until the spring game which will be open to the public to view and see the work that the team has put in during this time.
