The Phi Kappa Psi fraternity at Ashland University offered a fundraiser for those in the chapter in the month of April, with all proceeds going to the Saint Jude’s Hospital.

Jim Schofstall, president of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity, and Forrest Kitzmiller, fundraiser chair at the fraternity, both say that giving back to those in need is a key principle in the chapter.

“We were founded on ‘The great joy of serving others’ and our two founders founded this fraternity trying to help everyone with a Typhoid fever epidemic long ago, Schofstall said. “I think that it is great to end this school year with a fundraiser to give back to those in need.”

“Giving back has always been a key principle of ours and we are so excited to have the opportunity to help those who need assistance,” Kitzmiller said.

The fraternity has set up an interesting prize for the member in the chapter who raises and commits the most money to the fundraiser, with the winner getting their head shaved in solidarity for those at Saint Jude’s.

“We were at a chapter meeting and one of our brothers had this idea of how we should raise money, and the person who raises the most money put their hair on the line,” Kitzmiller said. “We all thought it was a great idea and so far we have seen a lot of support from the guys in our fraternity and from those around campus when we tell them about it.”

This is not the first time that the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity has done philanthropic works. The fraternity had to cancel the annual Lip Sync event where proceeds go to Saint Jude’s this year due to COVID-19. During homecoming at Ashland University, the fraternity does a “Get Yolked” event where many can throw eggs at participants though a chicken wire, with proceeds going to Camp Newhop.

Camp Newhop also received about 1,600 dollars this year from the fraternity through the silent auction which is held every spring, according to Schoffstall.

Kitzmiller says that so far, the fraternity has raised over 2,300 dollars with one brother pledging more than nine hundred dollars, being the current front runner in the chapter.

“I think that this one means even more, especially when you look at the hard times that we are in right now,” Schoffstall said. “It shows that even in the times we are in, there will always be people who want to give back and help others in need.”

The fraternity will also be doing an Instagram Live event, where followers on the site can watch the event live with a date to be announced at a later date.
