Op-Ed: Open Letter to AU from Alum/Current Students

To Ashland University President and Board of Trustees:

We, Ashland University alumna, along with current students, are writing in regards to the troubling actions and inactions the institution has taken/not taken regarding sexual assault on campus. Most recently we have been horrified to learn of Ashland’s decision to remove shirts created for The Clothesline Project. Taking down shirts from The Clothesline Project, a movement designed to empower sexual assault survivors across the country, in the midst of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, is despicable. Ashland’s statement on the decision to remove the shirts is even more gut-wrenching to current students and past students who have survived sexual assault (often on Ashland’s campus). The statement cites ‘false information’ as a reason the shirts were removed; this idea further silences survivors, and encourages a mindset that prioritizes the safety of perpetrators rather than the safety of victims. These shirts made visible how awful the current system for sexual assault reporting at AU is. This system has not worked for years, and we as alumnae have been witness to multiple lawsuits or stories in which sexual assault survivors are blamed, ignored, or told it’s not a big deal by the very administrators hired to protect survivors (e.g. 2018 legal case). Ashland coaches, faculty, and staff have encouraged a misogynistic environment on campus that silences victims and protects abusers. The university has a problem on its campus, a problem that cannot and will not be removed by taking the visible evidence away. We hope that the university finally takes accountability for the ways in which it has failed its students. We are deeply ashamed of our university and stand with the current students and past students who have survived these traumas without Ashland’s help.
