When I first came to college, my biggest fears were screwing up, letting others down, and attempting new things. Now, after being at college for a semester, I understand that you need to try new things and fail, so you can learn. This past semester, I decided to try my hand at being talent on AUTV-20. The first time I did it, I was terrible! I made several mistakes, had to redo it many times, and I was a disaster in general, but after that I came back better. Now, I do most of my takes one time, and read with ease from the prompter.
This semester, I have taken on many roles. I am still fulfilling my role as a talent, but now I have added being social media intern to The Collegian. Even though I was a person who was not super well rounded in social media, I decided to go for it anyway to try something new. I will admit I have screwed up a few times in posting and not always doing my job to the best of my ability, but I instead take the time to learn in order to move forward.
Clearly, this doesn’t just apply to work or jobs, but it also applies to school, friendships, relationships, and so much more. For example, I decided to take a 300 level philosophy class as a freshman! The entire philosophy class is on Aristotle’s works. To a freshman, this may seem daunting, but I decided to embrace it as trying something new and different. At the beginning of the semester, I was not totally understanding the material, and was struggling to write the papers.
I felt like I was going to fail, so I went to the professor and got help. Now, I understand Aristotle better than ever! To all my fellow peers, especially freshmen, if you are afraid of trying something new and failing at it, go for it! Of course, failure sucks and it is going to hurt at first, but learn from it, embrace it, move forward, and keep getting better.
