The Ashland University men’s basketball team opened up Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with road wins over Lake Superior State (95-87 on Dec. 1) and Northwood (64-63 on Saturday). 

Sophomore guard Ben Haraway (27 points) and senior guard Adrian Cook (23 points) paced AU against Lake Superior State. 

Junior forward Marsalis Hamilton chipped in 15 points, while junior center Teddy Metzen and sophomore forward Phil Frentsos each contributed 10. 

Senior forward Torin Wetzel posted career-highs in rebounds (8) and assists (5) while adding six points.

The Eagles trailed 40-39 at halftime, and the Lakers increased their lead to five points one minute into the second half.

AU responded and tied the game at 46. Lake Superior State answered with a 10-2 run, but Ashland came right back with an 11-point run of its own to take a 59-56 lead. 

The Lakers then took a 61-59 lead before the Eagles went on a 13-0 run to take a lead that they would never relinquish.

AU (6-1, 2-0 GLIAC) trailed 63-57 with less than 90 seconds left in regulation against Northwood on Saturday before scoring seven straight points to earn the win.

Senior guard Boo Osborne scored five points to cut the Timberwolves’ lead to 63-62 with 42 seconds left. Hamilton then swiped a steal with 20 seconds remaining and made two free throws two seconds later to give Ashland its winning margin.

Osborne and Metzen scored 12 points each, while Hamilton chipped in 10 points and six rebounds.  Wetzel contributed seven points and six boards.

The Eagles will take on Saginaw Valley State on Thursday and Wayne State on Saturday.
