AU wrestling wins second home dual this week

After only a day’s rest the Ashland Eagles wrestling squad put together another solid performance against Davenport College by defeating them by the score of 38-3 Friday night at Kates Gymnasium.

The dual gave us a glimpse of one of the eventual new additions to Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, Davenport College.  Aside from what the score reflected the Panthers wrestling squad provided plenty of competition by pushing many of the Eagles wrestlers to the full extent of their matches.

No. 1 ranked redshirt senior Michael Labry was the only Eagle wrestler to win by tech fall in the 133 pound weight division as he defeated Davenport’s Kahle Scheenks 20-3

Redshirt senior Brent Fickel (149), freshman Garrett Hall (157), and sophomore Deaken McCoy (285) all won their matches by major decision, while sophomore Chandler Minnard (141), redshirt freshman Bret Romanzak (165), and senior Brenden Stanley (174) won by decision.

The impressive performance of the night belonged to redshirt Jordan Murphy who made quick work of Davenport’s Levi Sabin when he pinned him in 45 seconds at the 184 pound match.

“That was not the plan at all,” Murphy said. “I was trying to get a good workout in. So the plan was to get a good, long, grind match in. And the plan kind of went out the window early.”

Eagle head coach Josh Hutchins was pleased with his squad’s performance on such short rest.

“A lot of our guys were feeling tired,” Hutchens said. “But they just kept pushing the pace. And that’s what we’ve been asking them to do. So it’s great to see that whenever they’re not 100 percent, they can still keep pushing.”

Up next for Eagles wrestling they will be traveling to Lake Erie College to take part of a tri-meet between Kutztown Golden Bears at 2 p.m. and the Storm at 5 p.m.
