While some students were away from campus for Ashland University’s Fall Break, the athletic teams were busy in action on the road and at home.

Men’s Golf kicks off this recap, as they placed first out of an 11-team field at the Davenport Panther Invitational. Four of the eight members on the team placed in the top ten individual results, as junior Ben Jones and freshman Andrew Kolar tied for third place at 139 strokes each.

Also cracking the top ten for the team were Patrick Steffen in fifth and freshman Jake Amman in the eighth position.

The women’s golf team also participated in the Davenport Panther Invitational this past weekend and came out in eighth place out of the 11-team field. Junior Sophie Hemleben paced the Eagles with an individual sixth-place finish, while Dayton transfer Megan Pollock also cracked the top 20.

According to Co-Director of Athletic Communications Dusty Sloan, “This past weekend in Ashland University athletics was an exciting one: from volleyball going 3-0 at the Midwest Crossover, to our nationally-ranked women’s soccer beating a tough opponent at home, to our men’s golf team finishing the fall strong with a win of its own.”

Speaking of the volleyball team, redshirt junior Brooke Peiffer recorded her 1000th career kill in the NCAA this Saturday at the Midwest Regional Crossover against the University of Indianapolis.

Her contribution helped lead the Eagles to a perfect 3-0 record with wins against the aforementioned Indianapolis Greyhounds, Tiffin Dragons, and Bellarmine Knights.

Having won four of their last five games, the Eagles will be back in action this weekend for a pair of GLIAC matches against Northwood on Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 5 p.m. against Ferris State.

On Saturday, the Eagles women’s soccer team defeated Saginaw Valley State at home for their seventh straight victory and win no. ten overall on the season out of 12 games.

The final score was 2-1. Bella Petrock scored the first goal in the 11th minute, while Emily Ledbetter had the game-winner in the 69th minute.

On the other hand, the AU football team was close but came up short on the road as they fell to the Wayne State Warriors in double overtime 42 to 41.

Ashland once again used the second half to keep themselves in contention for a win, putting up 28 total points (21 in the fourth quarter) to force overtime. Both sides missed field goals in the first overtime period, which then set up a Gei’Vonni Washington rushing touchdown to start O.T. two.

Satchel Denton’s point after attempt was blocked, which left the Eagles only with a six-point lead. Wayne State secured the win after a 25-yard touchdown pass and a successful extra point from Niccolo Seilo.

Ashland looks to rebound Saturday as they host Michigan Tech at the Jack Miller Stadium, with kickoff set for 1 p.m.
