Men’s basketball advances to semifinals

Ashland University’s men’s basketball team traveled to Lake Superior State and defeated the Lakers 84-81 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinal matchup on Tuesday.
Ashland is 11-3 in its last 14 games and advances to its second consecutive GLIAC Tournament Final Four, winning a quarterfinal game in straight seasons for the first time since 1998-99.
Senior guard Boo Osborne paced AU with 22 points, while junior forward Marsalis Hamilton chipped in 18 points.
Other contributions for Ashland came via senior guard Adrian Cook (13 points, team-high 6 assists) and sophomore guard Nick Bapst (12 points).
The Eagles (18-9) shot over 50% from the floor and 80 percent from the free-throw line. Ashland dished out 17 assists and converted 11 Laker turnovers into 14 points.
AU trailed 11-10 early on, but Lake Superior State (16-10) scored the game’s next 10 points.
The Eagles then turned a 26-18 deficit into a 28-26 advantage.
The Lakers led 43-42 at halftime and increased their lead to 56-51 with 14 minutes left in the game.
Ashland took a 63-62 lead with 10:46 to play, a lead that it would not surrender the rest of the game.
Lake Superior State cut the Eagle lead to two points on four different occasions in the final minutes, but they could never get any closer.
Up next for AU is a GLIAC Tournament semifinal game against Findlay (23-5) at Ferris State at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
