Busy and Award-Filled Weekend for AU Sports
October 1, 2019
The weekend of Sept. 27 was a busy one for the Ashland University Eagles as multiple teams were on the road for their matches.
Volleyball barely escaped with a five-set victory over Davenport University to preserve what became a seven-game winning streak, then became eight following a sweep of archrival Grand Valley State.
For three straight weeks, an Eagle has taken home the GLIAC South Player of the Week. This time it was redshirt junior Brooke Peiffer taking home the honor.
AU will be back in action for a doubleheader of home matches this weekend against Lake Superior State and Saginaw Valley State.
The women’s soccer team began the GLIAC play this weekend by defeating Northwood 2-1 on Friday, and then proceeded to follow that up with a statement 3-1 win over No. 11 ranked Ferris State on Sunday.
AU goalie Hannah Lee scored Defensive Player of the Week for saving 11 of the 13 shots taken against her in the two games. AU is back on the pitch this Friday at Purdue Northwest with kickoff set for 1 p.m.
The low-scoring struggles continue to plague the men’s soccer team. Ashland put up just two goals over the weekend, and yet came out with a 1-1 record after shutting Northern Michigan Friday night one to nil.
They could not sweep the homestand as they fell Sunday to Wisconsin-Parkside 2-1. The men have a doubleheader of GLIAC matches on the road this weekend, with Purdue Northwest on Friday and GLIAC newcomer Upper Iowa on Sunday afternoon.
Following a doubleheader Saturday against Michigan Tech and Lourdes College, the women’s tennis team managed to eke out a 4-3 win over Lake Superior State on Sunday.
This win moves them to 8-2 on the season. The purple and gold will be back on the court this Saturday morning at Wayne State, with the first serve at 11.
The men’s tennis team has started off fairly strong this season but struggled on Sunday at the ITA Regionals at Grand Valley State.
One member of the team is striving to serve as a leader for his squad.
“I try to give 100 percent in practices and serve as a good role model for the team,” sophomore Stuart Brdicka said.
