Big Greek happy family: Greek Week recap and Greek honors winners

Another year over, and what has Fraternity and Sorority Life at Ashland University done?

Assistant Director of Student Life Dustin Hargis said the entire FSL community has done solid work and Greek Week was another successful week.

“All the chapters were able to come out and have a good time celebrating each other,” said Hargis. “There was a lot of moments where you saw chapters cheering on other chapters, which showed the unity and the community we have.”

With a few changes being made to the format – going from individual fraternities competing against each other to teams – it made for a different competition compared to years past.

But the changes were not without pushback.

“At first, everyone was kind of like ‘what is this?’ and wondering whether it was going to work,” President of Panhellenic Council, said Becca Fijalkovich. “But by the end, the reaction was very positive and [everyone] ended up liking the changes. Hopefully, we can keep the ball rolling on that.”

Interfraternal Council President Jack Galloway agreed.

“There was a lot of healthy competition going on this year, and it was just a tremendous success across the board,” said Galloway. “I couldn’t be any happier without it went.”

The theme to Greek Weekend was Disney, entitled ‘Heroes and Villains’ with two teams of four: two fraternities and two sororities. Along with creating a video to fit their team, the teams faced off in a series of competitions to determine which team reigned supreme.

There was even a surprise change in the tug-o-war competition.

“It was the third-place competition between Kappa Sigma and Tau Kappa Epsilon. We were getting ready to start the match, and right as it starts, the teams dropped the rope, switched sides, and tugged the rope from the other side,” said Hargis.

In the end, Alpha Phi and Phi Kappa Psi were the champions of Greek Week. The winning team got the opportunity to donate clothes and other goods in a Clothes Drive taking place that week to an organization of their choosing.

At the Greek Honors award banquet, Greek Life celebrated the year by honoring the most outstanding members and organizations.

Some of the general award winners were: Alpha Phi and Kappa Sigma for Most Improved Chapter, Delta Zeta and Phi Delta Theta for Most Outstanding Chapter of the Year, Kyle Wissel for Fraternity Man of the Year and Elinor Fortescue for Sorority Woman of the Year.

Ben Campbell and Alexis Berdine took home the awards for Most Outstanding Adviser.

Phi Kappa Psi was one of the big winners on the night: taking home awards in Outstanding Public Relations, Outstanding Fraternity Scholarship Program and the Charles Feeny Outstanding Community Service Project.

While chapter president Kyle Gerber thinks the awards are nice, he said that it was about having the hard work pay off in the end.

“Motivating people and being the kind of leader that encourages others to do more is one of the best things about our fraternity,” said Gerber. “It’s all about being active in the community and being giving of yourself to others rather than yourself.”
