Heroes and Villains: Greek Week goes Disney
March 22, 2019
Ashland University Fraternity and Sorority Life are encouraging everyone to be “part of their world” from March 25-30 in celebration of Greek Week, the one week during the school year where they celebrate all things Greek.
“It’s a celebration of being Greek and all that it entails,” Panhellenic Vice President of Programming and Delta Zeta member, Juliet Touma said. “It’s a chance for us to let loose in competition and also have fun at the same time. With all the work we have to do, it’s nice to just be stress-free for one weekend.”
Assistant Director of Student Life Dustin Hargis, agrees, he said.
“It’s one of the few times where we can get everyone to come together within the community,” Hargis said. “Trying to get 350 students to come together is not exactly easy, so it is special that we get to do this.”
The theme around Greek Week this year is Disney. Teams of four – two fraternities, two sororities – will be placed into one of two categories: heroes or villains.
Marvel vs. DC and Star Wars were also considered for themes during preparations.
While normally taking place the first week of April, Greek Week had to be moved up a week because, according to Touma, there were problems with booking facilities in the same week.
“It was hard to get both the Rec Center and Redwood Hall all booked at the same time during that week, so we just bumped it up one week,” Touma said. “Luckily we got it figured out and it’s fine.”
There will be plenty of events going on during the week but towards the end is when the events available for public viewing begin.
Monday to Wednesday, study tables will be held for chapter members to attend; Thursday, there will be a fashion show in Redwood Hall with the Heroes vs. Villains theme taking center stage. Members will be displaying outfits in accordance with their team and theme.
Friday is a “Minute To Win It” competition involving a pie-eating contest, trying to eat a donut off of a string without it hitting the ground and trivia on miscellaneous subjects such as Ashland history, Disney trivia and many other subjects.
There will also be a canned food and clothing drive going on during the week as well. The winning team at the end of the week decides what organization they want to donate the goods to.
Teams also make videos that are eight to 10 minutes long that show off their members creating scenes that involve their theme.
“At the end of the day, it’s all about service,” Hargis said. “You’re taking an oath to an organization to become a better version of yourself.”
Greek Week culminates into the Fraternity and Sorority Honors ceremony, which will be taking place in Upper Convo on April 7.
