AU to host chamber ensemble concert with award winning pianist

On Monday, Oct. 22, the Elizabeth Pastor Recital Hall at the Center for the Arts at Ashland University will host a chamber ensemble concert at 7:30 pm.

The concert will be featuring AU music professor Dr. Thomas Reed on clarinet, Maestro Arie Lipsky of the Ashland Symphony Orchestra on cello and flute, and Claudia Hoca, an award-winning pianist from Buffalo, New York.

Some of the pieces being performed include works by Sergei Rachmaninoff, Igor Stravinsky, and Johannes Brahms.

“What I like about this type of concert is that it’s different from a traditional orchestra,” Reed said. “In a traditional orchestra, you are confined to what the others performing around you are doing. Here, you get a little more interaction with the audience and the freedom.”

Aside from being a professor of music, Reed has been a regular concert musician, playing with the Cleveland Orchestra and the Akron Symphony Orchestra in addition to the Ashland Symphony Orchestra.

“This kind of music is not about something in the way that popular songs are now,” Reed said. “It’s more abstract, but that’s what makes it so engaging to the listener. They aren’t trying to find hidden meanings in the song. They can just enjoy the profound emotion of it.”

Lipsky is an Israeli native who serves as the music director and conductor of the Ashland Symphony Orchestra.

He has been in that position for 21 years. He also serves as the director and conductor for the Ann Arbor Symphony.

Hoca is a native of Austria and was invited by Lipsky to perform at the concert.

The performance is free and open to the public. More information about the upcoming concert can be found at http://news.ashland.edu/article/maestro-lipsky-dr-reed-and-award-winning-pianist-present-chamber-ensemble-concert.
