Ashland Women’s Golf looks forward to a strong season

The Ashland University Women’s Golf team started their season tied for fifth at the Michael Corbitt Fall Classic at the Lake Shore Country Club in Erie, PA on October 9. The Eagles ended day one at 333 strokes, tying them for fifth place out of the 20 teams competing.
Eagles Sophomore Hannah Lemons led the Eagles as she ended the day tied for third place individually with 78 strokes. As a true freshman, Lemons played in all 11 tournaments and ended her season with a shooting average of 78.26. She also received an honorable mention for the All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
AU Senior Monica Torda tied for 12th individually at the competition with a round of 81. Eagle sophomore Sophie Hemleben tied for 17th place individually with 82 strokes. Freshman Virginia Travers shot a 107.
AU junior Logan Pottorf finished the tournament with 92 strokes. Pottorf was recently announced as one of 82 AU student-athletes who received a Division two Athletic Directors Association Academic Achievement Awards.
Junior Claire Coughenour and freshman Leah Butscher competed as individuals at the event. Coughenour finished at 95 strokes and Burtscher with a round of 100.
Day two of the tournament was canceled due to inclement weather, leaving the Eagles tied for fifth at the end of the match.
Tiffin walked away from the tournament at first place with with a round of 319. Tiffin junior, Alice Putoud, led the Dragons with 74 strokes.
The Gannon Knights hosted the competition and finished the event in second place shooting a 327.
This Michael Corbett Fall Classic was the Ashland University Women’s Golf team’s first match under the leadership of new coach Audrey Nelson. This is Nelson’s first time as a collegiate head coach. Nelson worked previously at Big Walnut High School as the girl’s golf head coach.
The Ashland University Women’s Golf team looks forward to their next tournament at the Ohio Dominican University Cumberland Trail Classic starting September 22.
