Eagles for PRIDE hosts Q&A
March 25, 2018
AU’s LGBTQ organization, Eagles for PRIDE, will host a Q&A on March 26 at 8 p.m. in Eagle’s Landing.
Senior Joe Farber, president and co-founder of Eagles for PRIDE, said the event is in response to the letter to the editor titled “In response to the article titled, ‘A Different Kind of Romance: St. Valentine’s Day Experiences in the LGBT+ Community.”
“After that letter to the editor was published, there were a lot of people who were reaching out asking if we were going to write a response,” Farber said. “As to whether we would do that, that’s still up in the air, but we wanted our response to be something positive, something within our mission and values.”
Their organization’s mission is, “to make the university a safer and more accepting place and we modify that through education, through community, through support,” Farber said.
The event is open to everyone, even people who may disagree with what they are saying.
“I was actually contacted by Ben McClay, the one who wrote the letter to the editor, and he asked what time it was going until, in case he had the time to stop by,” Farber said. “We’re willing to host anybody who wants to come and learn.”
Farber plans for the organization to answer questions and set any myths to rest at the event.
“We decided to take a positive approach to this and dispel some myths we thought people had and, especially, myths that were displayed in the letter to the editor. We wanted to put a positive spin on things, rather than take a negative approach and just launch back with some other letter to the editor.”
Eagles for PRIDE is hoping that the Q&A will educate people and answer any questions they may have about the LGBTQ community Farber said.
“I hope people leave knowing at least one or two things more than what they came knowing,” Farber said. “That they leave having a better idea of what the LGBTQ community is like, what we’re about, what we’re not about, have a better understanding about who we are.”
