Delta Zeta hosts philanthropy event

Thursday night is all right for singing as Delta Zeta prepares to host its annual Songs For Starkey competition on March 15 with teams of two or three competitors from many sports and organizations on campus taking part.

The competition is divided into three rounds with the first two rounds consisting of the competitors being given clips of songs and guessing the name of that particular song. The third round requires naming the title of the song as well as filling in a line or two of lyrics from it.

All proceeds from the event will go to the Starkey Hearing Foundation, a charity that specializes in helping the deaf.

This is a deviation from years past when the competition was styled after popular show Don’t Forget the Lyrics.

“We decided to change the format to get more people involved and be on stage,” freshman Abbie Kaskey, co-producer of the event, said. “I think these changes will benefit the students and the participants and raise more money for the Starkey Hearing Foundation.”

Assistant Director of Student Life Dustin Hargis agrees.

“In changing the format of the event, we are hoping to attract a wider audience,” Hargis said. “Switching to what artists and songs you know rather than concentrating exclusively on lyrics allows more people to compete because while they may know the songs, they wouldn’t necessarily know all the lyrics.”

Prizes will be awarded for first, second, and third place. There will also be a raffle for Zac Brown Band tickets for their August 2 appearance at Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls.

Tickets are $2 presale and $3 at the door. The event takes place in Redwood Hall from 7-9 p.m.
