On Saturday night (Dec. 2) the Ashland University women’s basketball team faced the worst field goal shooting night of the 2017-2018 season, and still won by a margin of 26 points.

The Eagles (8-0, 2-0) defeated Ferris State (6-2, 1-1) 95-69 in their second Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game of the season despite shooting 35.4% (29-82) from the field.

The other large amount of scoring came from the free throw line as the Eagles shot 35 free throws and made 30 of them (85.7%).
Leading the way for Ashland was the duo who has dominated all along in this young season, senior Laina Snyder and sophomore Jodi Johnson. This time, Johnson had the edge with 23 points in the contest, 9-11 from the charity stripe, while Snyder contributed 22 points.

It was Johnson’s fourth 20-plus-point game this season, and for Snyder, it was the sixth such game of 2017-18, and third in a row.

Other Eagles scoring in double digits was senior Andi Daugherty with 12 points while sophomore forward Sara Loomis came off the bench to contribute 11 points. Sophomore guard Renee Stimpert also contributed nine points but more importantly eight assists to the team total 22 assists.

Ferris State got on top first by scoring the first five points and went back and forth with Ashland throughout the first quarter. The Eagles led 17-16 at the end of the first but were able to force eight turnovers early on.

In the second quarter, Ashland put together a scoring run that got them to their first double digit lead at 37-27 with 2 ½ minutes left to go in the half. The Bulldogs then went on a 10-6 lead before going into halftime still down to the Eagles 43-37.
Ashland came out of halftime on fire as they outscored Ferris State 40-21 in the third quarter to seal the deal on the evening as they comfortably went into the fourth quarter with a 83-58 lead.

Leading the way for the Bulldogs was senior forward Rachel McInerney with 16 points while freshman guards Kelsey Wyman and Shaniya Huggins came off the bench with 12 and 10 points, respectively. The Bulldogs topped the Eagles in free throw percentage however by shooting 88% (22-25).

After playing their first six of eight games of the season on the road the Eagles will come back home to return to GLIAC action.
The Eagles will host Wayne State (6-2, 1-1) on Thursday night (Dec. 7) at 5:30 p.m. at Kates Gymnasium in Ashland, OH.
