Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play has begun for the Ashland University women’s basketball team, but the way they play and win basketball games has not changed.

The No. 1 Eagles (7-0,1-0) traveled to Lake Superior State University on Nov. 30 and routed the Lakers on their home floor 95-49.

This game contributed to a number of winning streak categories that the Eagles have added on to as they won their 44th consecutive game. Ashland currently holds the third longest winning streak in Division II women’s basketball history, with the longest streak being 51 games (Washburn, 2005-06).

Leading the way for the Eagles once again was senior forward Laina Snyder who shot an impressive 11 of 14 from the field and added a free throw to equal 23 points on the evening.

Other large contributors for Ashland was senior forward Andi Daugherty who had a season-high 16 points while sophomore guards Renee Stimpert (13) and Jodi Johnson (11) also scored double digits.

The Lakers (0-5,0-1) held on throughout the first quarter as the Eagles led 21-18 early in the second. However, the Eagles were able to extend their lead after a 10-0 run as they went into halftime with the 40-28 advantage.

Coming out of halftime, Ashland scored the first four points and with just two minutes to play in the third quarter the Eagles found themselves with a 60-35 lead while holding the Lakers to just seven points in the third.

In the second half, Ashland outscored Lake Superior State 55-21 which ultimately sealed the victory for Ashland.

The top point scorer for LSSU was senior center Tamara Novic who contributed 22 points and seven rebounds while no other Laker scored more than seven points.

Statistically, the Eagles led the Lakers in every major category including field goal percentage, 57.6% by the Eagles and 36.7% by the Lakers. Ashland also had 35 rebounds, 29 assists, 27 bench points and 62 points in the paint.

The Eagles will look to continue their dominance as they stay in Michigan to challenge Ferris State on Saturday (Dec. 2) at 7 p.m. in Big Rapids, MI.
