Police chase mail room worker

A temporary Ashland University employee has been arrested for resisting arrest after being chased by Ashland police Sept. 2, according to the Ashland Police Department.
Jerod Ramsay, who was hired through the mail room as a temporary delivery worker for the beginning of the year, was approached by police officers with a warrant for his arrest, according to Dave McLaughlin, director of safety services.
Ramsay then attempted to escape the officers, forcing them to pursue him on foot, McLaughlin said.
The officers chased Ramsay behind the Student Center, across Claremont Avenue and past Upper Convo before catching him and arresting him at Moss Hill, behind the football stadium.
The Ashland Police Department said the warrant was delivered from Delaware County.
This helped confirm McLaughlin’s statement that the warrant was for missing a court date in Columbus.
According to the Delaware Municipal Court, Ramsay was charged with a first-degree misdemeanor for theft in May. He pleaded not guilty.
McLaughlin said part of the job application asked for any prior felonies but misdemeanors were not checked for.
He went to explain that this is because Ramsay’s position did not involve student care and thus did not raise a “critical question.”
“I don’t believe a misdemeanor should disqualify someone from such a position,” McLaughlin said.
The Ashland Police Department would not comment on the nature of the misdemeanor.
