Student arrested for alleged possession of marijuana

An Ashland University student was arrested Monday evening by the Ashland Police Department as part of a marijuana trafficking investigation.

Tyler Mann, 18, of North Canton, a freshman AU student and 4th-floor resident of Kilhefner Hall, was booked into the Ashland County Jail at about 7:30 p.m. Monday. He was released at noon the following day pending a grand jury investigation. The case has been forwarded to the Ashland County Prosecutor’s Office for review.

Mann was arrested for alleged possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia, according to Director of Safety Services Dave McLaughlin.

Police recovered approximately $1,000 worth of marijuana, along with evidence of trafficking and cash, after serving a search warrant Monday afternoon, according to a press release from the police department.

Safety Services assisted Ashland Police Detectives from the METRICH Task Force with the search.

“We had information that led to the investigation of this individual,” McLaughlin said.

He would not comment on the nature of the information they received but added that Safety Services relies heavily on tips when it comes to suspected drug use on campus.

The police spent about an hour searching Mann’s room for drugs and other paraphernalia, then left campus around 6:15 p.m., according to McLaughlin. He added that Safety Services’ policy is to not interfere with official police business.

“We open the door for them so they can go in and do their thing,” McLaughlin said.

Mann was also suspended from the AU football team by the coaching staff several weeks ago due to a violation of team rules, according to Al King, assistant athletic director. Mann had not appeared in any games prior to his suspension, King said.

Mann’s case remains an open investigation through the Ashland County Prosecutor’s Office, according to investigator Tony Shambaugh.
