Eagles dominate holiday tournament

By Matt Brubaker

Most use the Thanksgiving holiday to rest and lay low for a couple days. The Ashland women’s basketball team used the five-day break to show off their skills on the hardwood by running over Urbana and Wheeling Jesuit Nov. 27 and 28, and improved their record to 5-0 on the season.

Urbana

The Eagles used an impressive shooting display against Urbana and defeated the Blue Streaks, 83-53, which was their largest margin of victory of the season at the time.

The Eagles began the first half by draining three after three, as they finished the half by making 6-of-10 threes. For the game, the Eagles converted 9-of-17 threes.

Sophomore guard Kaci Finfrock and Jena Stutzman led the charge for Ashland as Finfrock scored a career-high 15 points while Stutzman continued to impress in her early Eagle career with 13 points.

Daiva Gerbec notched her second double-double of the season by scoring 21 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.

Not only did the offense impress Head Coach Sue Ramsey, the defense did too.

Ashland held Urbana to just 53 points, which was the third consecutive game Ashland limited a team to 53 points or less.

The Eagles held the Blue Streaks in check, as they shot just 32 percent from the field.

Wheeling Jesuit

The Eagles completed the Holiday Inn Express Classic sweep with a dominating 80-45 win over the Cardinals of Wheeling Jesuit Nov. 28.

The Eagles, in similar fashion to the Urbana game, started quickly by shooting 56 percent from the field and making five three pointers. The Cardinals were unable to stop the Eagles, and to make matters worse, the Cardinals couldn’t find the basket, as they made just eight first-half shots and trailed 42-22 at the intermission.

Stutzman continued to perform against the Cardinals, as she went 8-for-16 from the field and scored a team-high 20 points. For Stutzman it was her second 20-point game of the year and her performance notched her GLIAC Player of the week honors.

Stutzman received help from her front court mates Liz Tyler and Gerbec.

Tyler finished the game with 10 points, six rebounds and three steals, while Gerbec tallied 10 points and 13 rebounds. Sophomore Lindsay Tenyak came off the bench and scored 11 in the win.

Tenyak has come off the bench for Ramsey in the first five games, yet she is fourth on the team in scoring at just under nine points per game.

The Eagles begin GLIAC play on the road against Hillsdale Dec. 2 before traveling to Wayne State Dec. 4. Hillsdale is currently 5-0 on the season while Wayne State is 0-5.

The Eagles first home game in conference will be Dec. 16 against Northwood. The Timberwolves are currently 2-4.
