Swimming Takes Third at GLIAC Championships

Both Ashland’s men’s and women’s swimming teams finished third at the 2011 GLIAC Championships. The meet took place from Feb. 10 to Feb. 12 in Jenison, Mich.

The men’s meet finished with Wayne State coming in first with 852 points, Grand Valley State coming in second with 728 points and Ashland University coming in third with 714 points.

The women’s race finished with Wayne State coming in first with 868 points, Grand Valley State coming in second with 736 points and Ashland University coming in third with 563 points.

On the men’s team, sophomore Cheyne Fisher finished first in the 200 meter breaststroke setting a GLIAC record with a time of 1:52.29 and established an “A” cut for nationals. Sophomore Tyler Bailey was the runner-up in the 100 freestyle with a time of 43.35. Sophomore Tyler Remmel finished third in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:02.68. Sophomore Mauricio Uranga earned third place in the 200 backstroke, breaking the GLIAC record with a time of 1:50.21 and establishing a “B” cut for nationals.

On the women’s team, sophomore Julie Widmann was the runner-up in the 100 freestyle with a time of 51:04. Freshman Gabriela Verduga Arzaluz was third with a time of 51:42. Freshman Lauren McClure was third in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:08.33.

The women’s 400 freestyle relay finished second and hit an “A” cut with a time of 3:26.58. Members of the relay team include Widmann, Arzaluz, junior Maura Anderson and sophomore Rachael Ausdenmoore.

The men were ranked 7th and the women were ranked 2nd in the latest CSCAA Division II Poll.
