September 14, 2011
Justin Garris, the former Ashland University forward was drafted recently to the National Basketball League of Canada by the Summerside Storm. The Storm, an expansion team located in the Prince Edward Islands, selected Garris second overall.
The 6-foot 3-inch, 200 pound Garris is projected to play shooting guard for the team. Garris impressed the team with his athletic ability as well as his hustle up and down the court. The leagueheld a combine on August 20, the day before the draft, and Garris showed enough skill to impress the scouts there.
Garris, who is originally from Ledgewood, NJ, played for the Eagles for two years after transferring from New Jersey Institute of Technology. In his first year with the Eagles as a junior, he averaged 3.5 points and 1.6 rebounds per game. His senior year, Garris bumped up his averages to 6.6 points and 2.3 rebounds.
When asked how he felt about his playing style, Garris said that he is an athletic player that loves to get up and down the court but likes to think he can shoot as well.
“I like to think I’m just an all-around player,” he said in an interview on the live broadcast of the draft online.
The Summerside Storm begins play in November against the league’s Quebec team. Justin Garris will definitely be ready to play.
