September 21, 2011
Ashland alum Joe Horn is taking his talents to Canada to play in the Canadian Football League.
Horn, who was signed by the Indianapolis Colts in August and cut before the season started, announced that he was going to play receiver for the Calgary Stampeders live last night on 93.1 “The Fan.”
The Canadian Football League, also known as the CFL, is an eight team league consisting of an East and West division. There is an 18 game regular season and three teams in each division make the playoffs.
The regular season typically begins in early July and ends in early November. The playoffs last three weeks and every team is fighting to play in the CFL version of the Super Bowl, the Grey Cup. The CFL has already finished week 12 of the regular season and the Grey Cup will take place on Sunday, November 27.
The CFL is played on a 110-yard field and it is 12 v. 12, compared the NFL which is played on a 100-yard field and is 11 v. 11. There are also three downs compared to four. The Stampeders are currently tied for first in the West Division with a record of 7-4.
Horn finished up his Ashland football career in 2010, setting many receiving records along the way. Horn owns the career touchdown receptions record with 28 and the single-season record with 12. Horn also owns the record for most career receiving yards with 2,681 yards on 170 receptions.
