Protest held at AU
October 11, 2011
Ashland University hosted a small group of protesters Saturday, Oct. 8. A sign sporting “Kasich’s Selling Children Short” was hoisted high into the air with a backdrop of angry middle-aged men and women.
The group of small protesters was not only an annoyance to supporters of the Republican party, Issue 2, and Kasich himself, but also to AU students who shouted from the safety of their bedroom windows for the protesters to leave, along with several verbal attacks of their own.
Several curious students even ventured into the parking lot to get a closer look at the protesters and their signs, while maintaining several rows of cars between themselves and the protesters of course.
Both students and AU employees were unwilling to comment on the protestors. One student was concerned that commenting on such a heated and controversial issue would cause her to “get into trouble.”
Those in favor of Issue 2 stayed sturdy in their silence, believing that the opposition and their shouting would speak volumes on their misinformation, and spoke only to encourage those to inform themselves and look into the facts of the issue, rather than blindly trust the protesters or the politicians.
Those against Issue 2 stayed silent because of the conservative campus and also because of a concern that their differing opinion would get them into trouble as well.
Ashland is home to thousands of educated people. Perhaps the best solution is to simply inform oneself.
