Madrigal Feaste “quite the experience”

Tickets are now on sale for the 36th Annual Madrigal Feaste, which will run from Nov. 30 until Dec. 4. This festival, held each year in Redwood Hall, features music and food, as well as entertainment throughout the evening. Despite the sense of history surrounding the event, however, many students have yet to attend the Madrigal Feaste.

Dr. Ron Blackley, professor of choral music, is one of the many people involved in the annual production.

“The Madrigal Feaste itself is a type of dinner theater but it’s set back in 16th century England,” Blackley said. “This is a production which requires the collaboration of a number of people across campus.”

This “collaboration” of people includes the Music Department, the Theatre Department, and the Catering Services of the university.

Throughout the evening, guests will be entertained in a variety of ways, from the musical selection to the one-on-one interaction with the Madrigal Players, lead by this year’s Jester, Eddie Carney.

In addition to visiting the dining tables, the Madrigal Players put on a comedic, 20-minute skit for the Royal Court.

“This year, we are taking a twist on a story that everyone knows and I think it’s going to be pretty funny,” Carney said.

The Royal Court, meanwhile, provides the music for the evening, with songs ranging from madrigals and ceremonial songs, to Christmas carols.

“There really isn’t any other event like Madrigal Feaste,” Carney added.

If you have seen the show, you may know what to expect, however, the event has something new to offer each year.

“There are people who have attended every single Madrigal Feaste,” Blackley said. “It has a loyal following.”

One reason for the devoted attendees may be the exceptional food provided. The four-course meal includes a vegetable soup, salad, roast beef, potatoes, carrots, and for desert, flaming figgy pudding.

Tickets for Wednesday, Nov. 30, are only $11 for the Student Night. Tickets for the December shows are $25 a seat, and large group discounts are available. All tickets are available now for the Madrigal Feaste.

“If you enjoy Christmas, good music, good entertainment, [and] good food, you should come out to the Madrigal Feaste,” said Carney. “It’s quite the experience.”
