Ashland, are you ready to rock?

By Kate Brickner

Facebook is possibly the most amazing creation in the world. There are so many stories and events you only hear about through Facebook. For example, it was only by happenstance that I stumbled upon a new project in Ashland – a music venue and night club actually – through Facebook.

This new project is called The Warehouse and while it is not completely official, the venue is just what the doctor – or in this case, the college students – ordered.

“Our main goal would be to give people and young adults a place to hang out in Ashland,” TJ Draper, office coordinator of The Warehouse, said.

The venue has been in the works for a while but it has been held up due to uncertainty of location.

“We have a few locations in mind and we are currently in talks with building owners and trying to select the best possible location for the venue,” Draper said. “Cost is also a big factor right now. Our plan would be to rent an event hall or possibly a more permanent space, not actually purchase an entire building.”

Though the actual space has not yet been determined, this is not stopping The Day & Brabenec Corporation from making this much-anticipated hang out spot for college students come true.

Now the question remains: What is The Warehouse?

According to the Facebook page, it is “a premier club/venue offering a safe, positive environment where people of all ages can enjoy live music and performances.”

“We would probably split the weekend up into Friday as a concert night and Saturday as a club night,” Draper said. “A couple of our sister companies have essentially endless contacts with local, regional and even some national bands. The plan would be to feature mostly local or regional acts.”

Essentially, the people of Ashland would have a club and concert venue all in one, an exciting prospect, considering that most students go elsewhere on the weekends.

“I hear about people going to Cleveland or Columbus concerts and nightclubs all the time,” Draper said. “Essentially our town is losing out on all the extra revenue, as well as the economic growth and opportunities.”

The main complaint around AU has been, for quite some time, that there is nowhere for college students to go and have fun in the area. In fact, the general complaint with a college or university in a small town is that there is never anything to do. This venue could be an amazing addition not only to the community but to campus life. Unfortunately, it may take longer for this venue to open than most AU students would prefer.

“We were hoping to have a Halloween grand opening concert,” Draper said, “but due to setbacks we don’t quite see that happening. Currently we do not have a set date.”

Although it may take a few months, The Warehouse will eventually be open for business and when it is, AU students will be able to check out all it has to offer. However, if a student is merely looking for an elsewhere to drink, that student should not look here.

“[Alcohol] has been brought up in several meetings,” Draper said, “as well as during the development stages of the entire concept. We understand that it could bring in added revenue but at the same time, I think we’re leaning more towards creating a more positive environment.”

This will obviously affect the age of admittance to concerts, as well as the club itself. The current idea of The Warehouse is to allow people of all ages to come and have fun. For freshman in need of something to do, this could be a prayer answered.

“Essentially we would want to provide a place where teens and young adults could hang out and have fun,” Draper said. “I understand there really isn’t a lot of places like that here…but we would also be a more diversified concert venue.”

The Warehouse is also looking for local acts to host. By visiting the Facebook page, a local band could get a deal pretty simply.

“Most of the time, it would consist of either the band contacting us or visa versa about playing,” said Draper. “If we are having an upcoming show, we would then lock them in for that specific date and start promoting the event with print material and through social media.”

How much more perfect could this venture be? Increased revenue for the town, a higher retention rate on the weekends, and possibly even the discovery of the next “Rolling Stones” right here in Ashland?

In a town with no movie theatre, no club, and not even a mall, this could change everything.

As more information becomes available, you can find it on The Warehouse Facebook page, titled: The Warehouse (Concert Venue & Nightclub). Like it and support the place which could potentially make weekends better, providing entertainment and an all-around good time.
