Eagles slay the Dragons
October 12, 2011
This past weekend the football visited the Tiffin Dragons to continue their winning ways in the GLIAC. The eagles improved their record to 4-1 in the conference with a triumphant 70-13 win over the Dragons.
Quarterback Taylor Housewright had a field day, throwing for 258 yards and three touchdowns. His favorite target for the game was Anthony Capasso, who had four receptions for 123 yards and one touchdown. The Eagles managed to record a season high in total yards on offense with 590.
Ashland got out to astonishing 49-0 lead before Tiffin got its first score. The Eagles are currently running on a three game winning streak with wins over Northern Michigan, Northwood, and Tiffin. This was the Eagles’ second highest point total in school history.
The Eagles scored in the first quarter for the first time this season when defensive end Matt Stoinoff intercepted a pass just over a minute into the game and returned it 25 yards into the end zone.
The explosive offense didn’t just pass the ball, as they looked to their reliable true freshman tailback Jordan McCune, who is putting up a very impressive season. McCune pounded the Tiffin defense for 71 yards rushing and two scores, and then received a 54-yard touchdown pass from Housewright. McCune is now fourth in the GLIAC in rushing yards and has scored nine touchdowns.
He wasn’t the leading rusher however, as junior tailback Justen White-Reid was able to carry the ball 13 times for 113 yards. The Eagles out-rushed the Dragons 293-25. Other stars of the game included junior defensive back Donnie Dottei, who had two interceptions, and freshman wide receiver Eric Thompkins, who had a 23-yard touchdown reception.
The Eagles’ defense played solid, only allowing short yardage plays as they held the Dragons to 13 points total for the game and a total of 327 yards. Tiffin quarterback Dan Pitts was 30-53 for 302 passing yards and two touchdowns.
If there was one weak spot for the Eagles it would be the pass defense. Ashland ranks seventh in the GLIAC in pass defense and third in rushing defense. The Eagles don’t have an easy schedule coming up, with the homecoming game at 2 p.m. Saturday against Wayne State. Wayne State is 5-0 and ahead of Ashland by one game. If Ashland can get a win this week they will be in a tie on top of the South Division and GLIAC overall.
The Eagles know they have a great opportunity ahead of them with another brutal matchup at North Division leader Saginaw Valley State in a nationally televised game 8 p.m. the following Thursday.
The GLIAC is up for anyone’s taking and Ashland is right there in the middle of the pack. The Eagles will have to rely heavily on the arm of quarterback Taylor Housewright as Wayne State is ranked 6 in the GLIAC in pass defense.
