Internship panel to be held at AU
October 5, 2011
The Career Services Center (CSC) is presenting an internship panel to be held Oct. 4 from 7-9 p.m. in the student center auditorium. This panel, organized by the CSC and student senate junior class president Shannon Frasher, will feature students who recently completed their internships.
According to Karen Hagans, executive director of the CSC, these student panelists will share a variety of information, including information about the internship application and interview process, what knowledge/skills they brought to the internship and how they believe the internship will aid them in their career journey.
Hagans said that having an internship can be an important decision for students to pursue.
“Internships are a win-win,” Hagans said. “The candidate gains experience and learns more about the career field and the organization/employer [and] the employer has the opportunity to contribute to a student’s learning while benefiting from their work. The employer also gets to see the student ‘in action,’ which might aid the employer in making a full-time hiring decision. Many interns are hired by the organization where they completed an internship.”
Hagans said this will be an important panel for all students to attend, not only with regard to the prospect that all Ashland University undergraduates should complete at least one internship or field placement before graduating. Hagans cited several benefits that students can draw from this informative session.
“Juniors should be planning now for their internship during their junior year and/or their internship between their junior and senior year,” Hagans said. “Freshmen and sophomores will gain a great deal of information to plan for their internship or internships in the future.”
Hagans also said that students should attend even if the panelists represent majors other than their major because the general information shared by the panelists will be very helpful.
Frasher said that there will be at least four panelists presenting with possibly more attending. Frasher will be talking about her time as the operations intern for the Lakeside Leadership Academy.
She will be joined by seniors Kim Coates, who interned in Washington, D.C. for congresswoman Betty Sutton; Dave Thomas, who interned in Washington, D.C. for the Institute for Humane Studies as the conference management intern; and Brittany Johnson, who interned with the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland as a statistics and analysis intern.
Hagans said that, in addition to this and other panels and workshops, the Career Services Center offers résumé and cover letter writing assistance, interview skill development opportunities and internship search/research opportunities and assistance.
