AU forward will be announced as WBCA Player of the Year April 2
March 28, 2012
The accolades just keep coming for the women’s basketball team.
After being named the Daktronics Midwest Region Player of the Year, the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Association Player of the Year, First Team WBCA, most valuable player of the GLIAC and NCAA Midwest Regional tournaments and an Elite Eight all-tournament selection, junior forward Kari Daugherty still has one award to add to the collection.
Though it will not be officially announced until April 2, Daugherty has been told that she was named WBCA Player of the Year.
The award was announced at the “Eagle Nation Celebration” Tuesday in Kates Gymnasium.
“It’s awesome,” Daugherty said. “I can’t believe it actually happened. I’ve always said, though, there’s no way I could have ever gotten that award had our team not been so successful. To us, it’s a great testament to our team and how well we did this year.”
Daugherty led the country in rebounding (14.1 rpg) and double-doubles (27) and was seventh in points per game (21.3). She also led the GLIAC in scoring and rebounding.
She set NCAA Division II women’s basketball tournament records for most rebounds and most field goals and was one point shy of tying the record for most points.
As she always does, Daugherty gave all the praise to her Lord and Savior.
“I really hope that God can be glorified through it,” she said. “I mean, I played this whole year for Him, so I hope that with this recognition that he gets all the recognition for it.”
Daugherty will return next season as part of a team that returns all of its players except for guard Jena Stutzman.
Also returning will be 2010-11 All-American junior forward Daiva Gerbec and freshman point guard Taylor Woods, who missed time due to injury.
