Action in Ashland: Students explore the many activities both on and off campus

by Jay Kunzi

Ashland may seem like a small and boring town, but there is always something to do.

Here at Ashland University, Campus Activities Board (CAB) is always putting on events from Spring Fest, to movies on the quad, to foam dance parties, and more.

Last year’s Spring Fest was put on by Ashland’s CAB and featured plenty of fun activities from an exhilarating zip line, a live band and competitive inflatable games/rides.

During the weekends, CAB is always showing recent DVD releases out on the quad on campus.

“Sitting in a dorm room cooped up all day is not the best way to spend free time here in Ashland,” said Ashland University student Martin Renemans.

If campus is not an option to spend some well-deserved free time, then another option is the nearby city of Mansfield.

Mansfield is loaded with options for students to enjoy themselves while being off campus, but close enough to drive back within 15 minutes if needed.

Mansfield consists of the Richland Mall, the all-popular Chipotle and a number of other restaurants around the area.

“I visit Mansfield every day, not only because I work there, but also because there’s a lot more to do there,” said AU student Drew Polson.

There are also things to do directly in Ashland. There is the Luray Lanes Bowling alley right here in Ashland, where bowling is free from 9pm until 11pm on select Thursdays with presentation of a student ID.

“The bowling is not only free, but I have a blast every time I go,” says Clark Resident, Lauren Miller.

There is the oh-so-famous Lower Convocation center where students can barely resist visiting when walking by due to the overpowering aroma of freshly cooked food.

And after stuffing your face at convo, why not work that food off at the Ashland University recreation center, complete with workout equipment, indoor pool and hot tub, two full basketball courts, racquetball courts and an open track/balcony where you can feel the burn while jogging and watching a pickup basketball game at the same time.

Not feeling well? Feel like just having a nice quiet night in? Lower Convocation offers students the opportunity to order food and have it delivered straight to their dorm room in case of sickness.

The University also has Armstrong cable and wireless internet so the dorm room doesn’t get too boring.

There is also a nearby movie and video game rental store where students can drop by and rent a movie for a nice date night in the dorm room, and, with Little Caesars Pizza being right next-door, pick up a five-dollar pizza to enjoy with company.

“I sometimes just like to have a chill night with friends in the dorm room, order some pizza, rent a movie, and just hangout in my room,” explains AU student Mike Hummer.

There are a lot of complaints as to the boredom here in Ashland, but it’s not as bad as most make it out to be.

There is plenty to do here in the town. With a lot of patience, imagination, and a little bit of investigation anyone can enjoy their stay here in Ashland, Ohio.
