An internship in the Golden State

By Radley Stahl

How would you like to spend a semester in Los Angeles, Calif., while interning at one or two professional companies?

Well the opportunity could be your’s.

Elon University offers a chance to take classes at Elon University while also interning with a professional company.

This new program is geared toward any college student that wants to explore careers in the entertainment industry. Elon in Los Angeles is a unique nine-week program that offers students the opportunity to live, learn and intern in the entertainment capitol of the world.

Students in this program will be enrolled in three to four classes while working at one or two professional internships.

Some of the classes available will be Media Law & Ethics, Acting for Cinema, Entertainment Public Relations and Screenplay Theory and Analysis.

These classes can be used to fill requirements back at your university.

The Elon in L.A. program accepts up to 40 students, who will earn 6 hours of credit (two hours of internship and four hours of a communication elective) while onsite in Hollywood.

All students participating in Elon in L.A. are required to live in apartments, which are contracted through the university and located right outside the gates of Universal Studios.

These apartments are fully furnished and come with wireless Internet and an onsite health club.

You share the apartment with three other students who are also participating in the Elon in L.A. program.

The apartment also comes with full camera gear and fully loaded Macs with editing capabilities.

While enrolled in this nine-week program, you and the other students will work the on end-of-summer project, which includes five short films that will eventually be screened at the American Film Institute.

The films are shot by the production students and star the top acting students in the program.

Ashland University senior, Dan Griffin went to Elon last year and said, “My professor, Tim McCarty, recommended the program to me. I interviewed with Jay McMerty via Skype and hoped for the best. Turns out I was the only non-Elon University student to join the program. It was pretty scary at first, living with people that I had never met before… But everyone in the program was really awesome.”

McMerty will be in the CFA TV Studio Nov. 7 at 7 p.m.

Elon University in Los Angeles has been operating a successful internship program for the last four summers and is ready to admit top candidates for the Spring 2013 semester.

This is a hands-on program where you get to produce, shoot act, write, promote and learn about the new trending technology that is revolutionizing the industry.

This would be a great opportunity to enhance your portfolio and experience Los Angeles while taking a hands-on course load.
