Secret Menu: A new take on an old classic
January 24, 2013
I love the new late night hours in Convo. They really allow me to stretch my unlimited meal plan further.
Because I’ve just now been afforded this extra hour and a half of free food every night, it almost feels like I’m stealing from the poor few that serve me my food.
I also vaguely feel like a terrible person because everything that is served from 10 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. has been cooked in a copious amount of grease. Yum.
From the first time I went in at night, I knew that the possibilities for secret menu ideas were countless with such an array of fatty foods.
For this week’s secret menu, I didn’t even need to pre-plan. I walked in, swiped and headed straight to the grill. Fried fish tonight? Yes please. I’ll take a few of those filets, and add in a burger, a grilled cheese, and chicken nuggets.
I tried putting a burger inside of a grilled cheese the night before, and it was great. Why not step it up a notch?
This one takes a page out of the McDonald’s secret menu playbook: the McGangBang. It’s a Filet-o-fish, McChicken and cheeseburger all put together.
Sitting down with Mary Ankrom, she came up with the great name for this sandwich. We shall call it the Late Night Gang Bang.
Sometimes, naming Secret Menu items is my favorite part.
Anyways, I opened up the grilled cheese while it was still hot and tossed the burger, two fish filets and five chicken nuggets inside. For good measure, I topped it with ketchup and honey mustard.
The prep was easy, but greasy (to be expected). That’s what napkins are for.
The Late Night Gang Bang was probably the easiest sandwich I have made for Secret Menu to date. It all stayed together quite nicely and, aside from the constant greasiness, stayed very clean.
It tasted great, too. The sweetness of the condiments set off the fish in a great way, and the burger, nuggets and cheese played right in. It just worked.
Surprisingly, I didn’t feel too terrible after eating it either. I even had some french fries on the side.
The nutrition on this one isn’t staggering, either. Calorie-wise, it came in at a measly 1080, considerably lower than I have been in the past. The 55 grams of fat (85 percent daily value) and 59 grams of protein (120 percent daily value) were respectable, though.
This is definitely something that I will consider making in the future. As if I needed another way to take advantage of late night Convo, the Late Night Gang Bang is it.
