Letter to the Editor: Finks urges students to use crosswalk

Dear Students,

Ashland University’s administration cares about the safety of its students and they have done much recently to protect its students who are crossing a number of streets on campus, including College Avenue, Claremont Avenue, King Road and Broad Street.

The University has worked with the city of Ashland to install:

– better marked crosswalks on streets throughout campus

– signs in the middle of these streets to caution drivers that students will be crossing in the crosswalk areas

– speed bumps on King Road in order to make vehicles slow down

– soon-to-be flashing lights on Claremont Avenue.

We can do all of these things to try to protect our students, but one fact remains. The students need to help us in this objective by always crossing at marked crosswalks and obeying the signals at protected crosswalks.

Recently concerns have been raised about pedestrian safety on Claremont Avenue. We again caution students about not jaywalking on this busy street. We want to protect all of our students, and students need to cross all streets inside the crosswalks with care and caution.

The crosswalk with the heaviest traffic is the protected crosswalk at the intersection of Claremont Avenue, College Avenue and King Road. Pedestrians must cross with the signal and within the crosswalk at this location. Students who cross at protected crosswalks against the signals can be ticketed for failure to obey a traffic signal.

Please use common sense when crossing at standalone crosswalks. Other crosswalk safety tips include:

– Stop at the entrance to a crosswalk and look both ways before entering the crosswalk

– Make eye contact with drivers to ensure they will stop

– Proceed only when the road is clear of traffic

– Scan for oncoming traffic as you cross

– Avoid the use of cell phones while crossing.

Thank you for helping us keep our students safe,

President Fred Finks
