Swim teams fall at Wayne State

The men’s and women’s swim teams traveled to Wayne State on Saturday, falling to the Warriors to drop their respective records to 1-4.

The score of the men’s meet was 174-111 in favor of Wayne State, while the women lost 165-117.

The Eagles did have a number of standout performances against Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference perennial power Warriors.

The men started things off positively with a victory in the 400-yard medley relay, where the team of Sergio Sanchis Peris, Greg Walters, Philipp Sikatzki and Alex Sheil touched the wall first in 3:30.27.

Ashland also took the win in the next race, with Lukas Jachno’s time of 10:10.59 beating everyone else in the 1,000-yard freestyle by almost six seconds.

Sikatzki (50.19) won the 100-yard backstroke and the 100-yard butterfly (49.82), Cody Roller (2:03.12) won the 200-yard individual medley and the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Sikatzki, Sheil, Sanchis Peris and Andrew Carlson won the final event of the day in 3:12.12.

Sheil (1:45.31) was second in the 200-yard freestyle, Walters (1:01.70) was second in the 100-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:17.00), Jacob Miller (21.90) was second in the 50-yard freestyle, Carlson (48.82) was second in the 100-yard freestyle and Kyle Hronek was second in the 200-yard individual medley.

For the women, the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Kaylyn Murphy, Gabby Verdugo-Arzaluz, Anna Evans and Laurin McClure took first in 3:41.35 and the 400-yard medley relay squad of Megan Schultz, Beth Long, Verdugo-Arzaluz and Murphy was second in 4:02.06.

Individually, Murphy won the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.86) and the 100-yard freestyle (56.63). Mattar was first in the 200-yard individual medley (2:11.85) and the 100-yard breaststroke (2:23.34), and Schultz was won the 200-yard backstroke (2:07.19).

Second-place finishers were Mattar (11:05.56) in the 1,000-yard freestyle, Long (1:09.24) in the 100-yard breaststroke, Paige Martin (2:15.75) in the 200-yard butterfly, Verdugo-Arzaluz (25.07) in the 50-yard freestyle, McClure (1:01.05) in the 100-yard butterfly and Brittany Finlay (2:15.98) in the 200-yard individual medley.

Ashland’s next meet is the Cleveland State Invitational on Nov. 22, 23 and 24.
