The Ashland University science department has received a $25,000 grant from the Gerstacker Foundation.

With the grant the science department is purchasing a liquid chromatograph (LC). Dr. Rebecca Corbin, a professor who helped to obtain the grant, thinks the LC will have a positive impact on the science department, and individual classes.

“Chemistry classes impacted by this grant will include Quantitative Analysis and Instrumental Analysis,” said Corbin. “These courses have had record-high enrollments in recent years, and the ability to provide students with hands-on experience with instrumentation is central to the mission of Ashland’s chemistry program.”

The liquid chromatograph is important in the research of analytical chemistry. The instrument will help students with the research of phytotoxic chemicals in plants and soil and the characterization of eye lens proteins.

“The decision to request funding for an LC was based on discussions among chemistry faculty as well as the nature of proposals funded previously by the Rollin M. Gerstacker Foundation,” said Corbin.

New equipment also appeals to potential students.

“Prospective science students are interested in the quality as well as the access to facilities and equipment,” said Corbin.

The Gerstacker Foundation gives aid to charities and organizations. According to their website, the foundation has donated over $181 million to worthy causes to make Michigan and Ohio a better place.
