Instagram gains popularity

On the left side of the screen is a child smiling in her all white attire wearing her colorful heart sunglasses flipped upside down. Next to it is another photo but this time of an older girl with her hair curled, wearing long, dangly earrings and an orange sequin prom dress.

The person in both photos is Ashland University freshman Raven Rudy. There is a fourteen year gap between the time the first photo of Rudy and the second photo was taken.

“I found the picture from when I was younger and I instantly thought I could have a good  transformation picture,” said Rudy. “It really shows how much I’ve grown over the years.”

The photo is posted to Instagram with the trend #TransformationTuesday. This is one of many trends people partake in on the social media network.

This trend has inspired the recreation of older pictures which people use to recognize the amount of change they’ve gone through from the time the first picture was taken to when the second one was.

When Instagram launched in October 2010, it had no trouble gaining popularity around the world. Two and a half years later, the photo-sharing app is used by 150 million active users, according to Expanded Ramblings.

Serving as a social media network, Instagram is commonly used amongst college students. Much like Twitter, Instagram users incorporate hashtags into their posts. The trend recently began where a hashtag would represent almost every day of the week on Instagram. The hashtags inspire its users to post a picture from the past or of their crush or even of themselves on a given day.

#SelfieSunday is the Instagram trend that starts off the week. On this day, users post pictures of themselves. People may post selfies of themselves other days of the week too but it is most acceptable on Sunday.

The next hashtag of the week is #ManCrushMonday. This trend is more self-explanatory. Instagram users post their male crush whether it be a celebrity, famous athlete, boyfriend or any other man crush.

In honor of this trend, a picture of Fergie’s husband, Josh Duhamel, was posted by sophomore Maria Falorio.

“I found a picture of Josh after seeing Safe Haven and posted it because I was so infatuated with him afterwards,” said Falorio.

#TransformationTuesday trends are followed by the hashtag, #WomanCrushWednesday. Woman crush Wednesdays are a spin off of man crush Mondays. On Wednesdays, Instagram users express their attraction to any female that has grabbed their attention. This again can vary from an actress to a model to a significant other or any other woman crush.

Senior Tyler Chancellor has been a consistent participant of Wednesday’s trend.

“Jessica Ann Strother is my favorite woman crush Wednesday. She is a Victoria Secret’s model and I chose her because she is gorgeous,” said Chancellor.

Arguably the most popular trend on Instagram is #ThrowbackThursday. On Thursdays, any picture that is not from that present day is acceptable to post. This is a single picture from the past whether it be from the day you were born, five years ago or yesterday.

Senior Brady Shriver has participated in this trend by posting a three year old picture of him and his cousin.

“I posted the picture of my cousin and I when we were at the sprint car races, Kings Royal, to remind him of how fun it was,” said Shriver.

Friday has been made kind of a copy cat of Thursdays with the hashtag #FlashbackFriday. Fridays are used to go back to a time no matter how long ago it has been.

Six days of the week have their own hashtag on Instagram. It is unknown why Saturday does not follow the same trends.
