New propositioned change to CORE courses
February 20, 2014
Student Senate has constructed a resolution to take Lifetime Wellness out of the list of core classes, and to instead include elements of the class into the Accent on Success curriculum.
The Lifetime Wellness class is required to graduate, but many students feel the class is repetitive and unnecessary, so a committee on Student Senate has prepared a resolution to cut it from the core.
“After looking at the syllabi of AOS and Lifetime Wellness,” said Kate Brickner, the executive officer of student affairs for Student Senate, “we found enough overlap that we figure making AOS a little bit better than what it is, would allow us to cut Lifetime Wellness from the core.”
Brickner’s Student Senate committee found the different type of wellness covered in the class could easily be covered in an AOS class.
“Occupational wellness and financial wellness are exactly the same things that are taught in AOS,” said Brickner. “According to the AOS syllabus you are supposed to be taught how to manage your money, and look at certain loans. That is exactly what you are taught in Lifetime Wellness.”
The difference between the Lifetime Wellness course and AOS course is the physical health portion of the class.
In the state of Ohio, a physical health class is mandated for students in both secondary school and high school.
“It just seems there is no reason to have Lifetime Wellness,” said Brickner.
It has not been determined whether AOS would be worth more credit hours if this resolution passes.
“We’re not attacking that department, and we are not trying to cut Lifetime Wellness as a class, we’re just cutting it as a core requirement,” said Brickner.
