Men’s golf takes eighth at GLIAC North Invite
September 25, 2014
Ashland University’s men’s golf team participated in the GLIAC North Fall Invitational September 20-21. The competition took place at HawksHead Links Golf Course in South Haven, Mich.
AU’s top five golfers competed together in the team competition and shot 614. The eagles finished in eighth out of 14 teams.
Two Ashland golfers finished individually in the top 25.
Senior Eric Dowiatt tied for 20th after shooting a 151.
Junior Austin Schreiber tied for 23rd with a 152.
Junior Brandon Nixon scored the lowest single shooting a 72 for Ashland on the first day of the competition.
Grand Valley State won the completion with their team shooting a 593. Malone University’s Garrison Myles finished as a medalist with a score of 143.
AU Collegian reporter Brandyn Hood spoke with AU golfer Jake Houston who competed in South Haven, shooting a 158 for the Eagles.
Houston said he didn’t think the invitational went as the team had planned.
He also noted the competition prepares the team for the spring season because of the tough weather conditions.
“I’m optimistic,” Houston said. “We saw good scores from Nixon, Dowiatt and Schreiber. We have all the tools and ability, we just need to put together.”
“I think we will bounce back like we did last fall. Typically in the spring it’s rainy and cold and that is what we saw this weekend, so the more exposure we get to those conditions the easier it will be to compete at a high level.”
AU’s next competition will be the NCAA Midwest Fall Regional Sept. 29th-30th Chicago, Illinois.
