Eagles soccer wins two, gains momentum

Ashland Women’s soccer keeper Karly Bueck had not had a shutout since Ashland’s second match of the season.

But it wasn’t because of poor performance. Bueck hadn’t allowed more than two goals the entire season and made seven saves twice.

So it wasn’t a matter if Bueck got another shutout but rather when she would.

Bueck broke out on homecoming weekend, posting consecutive shutouts in back to back wins over GLIAC rival Tiffin and non-conference opponent Seton Hill.

“Karly Bueck had deserved a shut out for a long time,” Head Women’s soccer coach Danny Krispinsky said. “I am happy we are able to help get her there.”

Ashland faced the Dragons of Tiffin University on Friday Oct. 10 to kick off homecoming weekend 2014.

Morgan Bittengle picked up right where she left off from the previous weekend’s road trip, where she scored three goals in two games.

Following a scoreless first half that saw the Eagles outshoot Tiffin 12-7, Bittengle teamed up with junior Krista Lewis to break the scoreless tie.

Lewis sent a cross into the box in the 48th minute that Bittengle smashed home for her fourth goal in three games.

The freshman’s seventh goal of the 2014 season pushed AU in front 1-0.

“Both Morgan and Krista are finding their form, and really building on their confidence from previous games,” Krispinsky said.

Bueck and the back line in front of her were able to make that 1-0 score hold up over the final 42 minutes.

AU continued a relentless attack throughout the second half, outshooting the Dragons 15-1, on their way to a 1-0 victory.

“The girls really made a decision in the second half to come out and play our style. It was a great second half for us,” Krispinsky said.

“We struggled to find our form for the first ten minutes but after that we calmed down and started to impose our game on them. And it showed,” Krispinsky said.

Bittengle was not finished on the weekend yet.

The AU women’s soccer team faced an invasion from Keystone state opponent, the Seton Hill Griffins, on Oct. 12 to cap homecoming weekend.

The Eagles played with a homecoming hangover in the first half, as the teams remained deadlocked through the halftime break.

AU dominated play in the second half.

In the 61st minute Carson Janssen corralled the rebound and deposited the ball into the back of the net.

Janssen’s second goal of the season gave AU the 1-0 lead.

Morgan Bittengle finished off homecoming weekend in grand style in the 69th minute. Bittengle found the twine for the 8th time this season to double the AU to advantage to 2-0.

Bittengle, who was named the GLIAC offensive player of the week for the week of Oct. 7, has scored goals in four consecutive matches and tied for second in the GLIAC with eight goals scored on the season.

Karly Bueck posted her second clean sheet in as many outings, and was aided by a strong performance by the back line in front of her that only allowed 3 shots all game.

AU defeated the Griffins 2-0 to improve to 7-4 in the 2014 season and moved into fourth place in the GLIAC southern division with a 3-3-conference record.

Up next for Ashland will be a road trip to Michigan to tangle with northern division foe Ferris State on Oct. 17. Two days later they’ll play powerhouse Grand Valley State.
