Homecoming weekend full of activities

Ashland University is trying some new things this year to encourage students to participate in homecoming activities, according to Angelique Cunningham, AU’s social media coordinator.

“We are asking students to follow AU on Twitter @Ashland_Univ and like us on Facebook for chances to win,” said Cunningham. “Besides the daily trivia or challenges that will be announced through Twitter and Facebook, we will be giving away prizes for select events including Spirit Day, Pizza, Pizza, Pizza Fan fest, the volleyball game on Friday and the football game.”

If students want to share their experience of homecoming week they just need to use #AshlandHC14.

The week will feature numerous events that students should keep in mind. Activities will kick off this Thursday with the powder puff football game at 9 p.m. at Jack Miller Stadium.

On Friday, comedian and actor Dave Coulier, famous for his role as Uncle Joey on “Full House,” will perform in Redwood at 9 p.m.

Additionally, volleyball and women’s soccer play Saginaw Valley and Tiffin respectively, while the AU Department of Theater presents the play “Saint Joan” in Hugo Young Theatre (there is also a performance of the play Saturday night at 7:30).

Saturday’s events start bright and early with the 5k Fun Run and Walk at 8:30 am, starting from the Rec Center.

At 10 a.m., WRDL 88.9 will kick off a tailgate party that will feature corn hole, live music, a pie-eating competition, and a live pregame show featuring interviews with coaches. The radio station will also be giving away an Lee Owens autographed football.

Then, at 11:30, Pizza, Pizza, Pizza Fan fest will start and last until 1 p.m., when the AU football team kicks off against Saginaw Valley State University. During the game, the king and queen for AU’s homecoming will be crowned.

The women’s volleyball team takes on Wayne State at 6 p.m. Saturday, while the women’s soccer team takes on Seton Hill at 2 p.m. Sunday.
