Comedian Dave Coulier wows AU
October 16, 2014
It was as if Matthew McConaughey, Dr. Phil, President Clinton, Robin Williams, Richard Pryor, Spongebob Squarepants, Scooby-Doo, and many others had taken the stage.
Well, not these individuals personally; but they were still embodied in a sense, through the impressions of stand-up comedian Dave Coulier.
He performed last Friday night courtesy of the AU Campus Activities Board in Redwood Hall.
Coulier’s set, which took place with approximately 550 students in attendance, lasted about an hour and a half long.
He focused on many different aspects in his comedy, everything from lifetime experiences, doing various voices, speaking of fatherhood, and reminiscing years past. Not to mention, of course, recollecting his experiences with his largest claim to fame as “Uncle Joey” on the classic ABC sitcom.
“Of course there will be some bits about Full House, because that’s the 900 pound gorilla in the room,” Coulier jokingly said.
Sure enough, Coulier was welcomed on stage to the Full House theme song. As he grabbed the mic, he referenced the show periodically with a large grin on his face.
“Do you think I’m going to say ‘Cut it out’ tonight? Are you expecting to see Uncle Jesse, or for Kimmy Gibler to randomly run across the stage?” referenced Coulier as the audience erupted in applause and nostalgic laughter.
Prior to his Friday night performance, Coulier did a telephone interview on 88.9 WRDL when he described his comedic career. “It has been many years of fun and immaturity” Coulier mentioned.
He alluded to the fact that many Full House fans have hoped for a reunion of the show.
“We’ve got a great fan base. We have people that love the show. It has even become cross-generational,” he said.
“I think we want to be very careful with that really nice legacy that exists right now. Honestly, I don’t know if a reunion show is going to happen or when, there is nothing official yet.”
On the same note, Coulier also joked, “It is really hard to bring back bad wardrobes and mullets, at this point.”
Coulier admits that his character “Uncle Joey” will continue to follow him everywhere.
“We had 24 million people watching us every week on ABC, and the show has never gone off the air since 1987,” he said. “So that is a lot of people that know my character. It’s flattering that people remember.”
Impressively, Coulier’s stand-up comedy performances are similar to his former TV show in that they are appropriate for all ages, which was the case Friday night as well.
“Believe me, I can swear like a sailor when I’m playing hockey with my buddies and I’m in the locker room. As far as being a comedian and performer, it’s just not my style,” he humbly said.
Contrary to what your initial thought may be, Coulier’s stand-up is more than just the memories of Full House. Most of his comedic routine is all him, and even includes a musical portion in which he comically plays the harmonica for audiences.
Coulier took the opportunity to bond with AU on Friday.
He performed his ordinary set yet made it an intimate show by interacting with students at the event, jokingly referencing collegiate budget cuts, and curiously asking about the large building on campus that he saw from his perspective on stage (which was the Clayton dormitory).
Finally, Coulier encouraged his audience to find him on social media, and to check out his website at www.davecoulier.com for exclusive tour dates for his showcase ”Glorified Birthday Clown,” and some Coulier merchandise.
Thankfully, Coulier started off a wonderful Homecoming weekend with an entertaining performance at Redwood hall with literally a full house. To hear the entire interview with Coulier, you can go online to www.wrdlfm.com.
