Students say Orientation Team is a rewarding experience

When freshman arrive at Ashland they are faced with making a life changing transition from high school to college, but with the help of the Orientation Team this transition is made smooth with a little bit of fun mixed in.

Many students choose to apply to be part of O-Team after witnessing them in action at his or her Drive-In.

“I knew I wanted to be on O-Team from my Summer Drive-In,” said O-Team Executive member and intern Stephany Elgin, “All of the O-Teamers seem so smart and put together. I really looked up to them. I was so excited to apply when the time came and I am glad that I did.

Being an O-Teamer is not all about welcoming freshman, but rather growing as a person and student.

“I always say that I become the best version of myself when I put on my purple polo,” said Elgin. “Being on O-Team has helped me grow in a number of ways. I have become friendlier and more willing to walk up and talk to someone I might not know. I have learned things about Ashland University that many people attend four years and graduate without knowing, such as a lot of AU history.”

O-Teamers also get to work with students other than freshman. O-Teamers get to interact with out of state students, transfer students, veterans, and older students who are going to college for the first time.

In order to prepare for drive-ins and orientation weekend O-Teamers take part in leadership training and team building activities.

“O-Team has taught me everything about myself,” said O-Team Executive Taylor Wade, “I’ve learned along the way that I can handle many situations at once without even thinking to react, it comes naturally now thanks to overcoming obstacles through this organization. I’ve learned I can get in front of hundreds of people and give presentations and entertain crowds. I’ve also learned how much I love Ashland and how much I love sharing that passion with new students.”

According to O-Teams’ webpage their motto is one about working hard and playing hard. Applications are now out to join the team.

“O-Team is for anyone that is looking for something new and rewarding to get involved in,” said Wade. “I have gained lifelong friends and life skills directly from my decision to apply.”
