Women’s winning streak reaches six

The Ashland women’s basketball team has been on a roll for the past month and a half. The Eagles have won 13 of their last 15 games, including their current six-game winning streak.

“It starts with our defensive intensity and then taking care of the basketball,” said head coach Sue Ramsey. “What we’ve been able to do to hold our opponents in field goal percentage and points is really speaking to the fact we are playing really solid team defense.”

“When we take care of the basketball, we end up on the winning side.”

Ramsey also said that the team having so many assists is another big factor to winning. “Our goal is always to pass up a good shot for a great shot.”

AU’s last three games were victories at Ohio Dominican, Tiffin and vs. Lake Erie. The win against Ohio Dominican was a milestone for Ramsey giving her 450 victories as a collegiate head coach.

Ramsey called it just “numbers”, but was humble about it saying that she is “very blessed and very thankful.”

The game against Ohio Dominican (6-14) started off slow for Ashland as they only scored 20 points in the first half.

The offense arrived in the second half with less than ten minutes left in the game. The Eagles would go from down by five, to ending in a 72-52 victory for the Eagles.

“We got good looks, we just didn’t knock them down,” Ramsey said of the offense’s struggle in the first half. “It was one of those games where you have to keep persevering.”

The next game against Tiffin (5-15) was a completely different story. Ashland had control during the entire game as they won 91-63 due to contributions form the whole team.

“It was so fun,” Ramsey said. “It was a total team effort.” Nine Ashland players played at least ten minutes in the game. All 12 of the active players on the roster participated in the game as well.

In those two games, senior Taylor Woods led the team in points by scoring 23 in both games. Woods’ performance in those two games led to her being named the GLIAC south player of the week.

Woods has been climbing up the Ashland all-time leading scorer list all season and currently sits with the sixth most points in program history.

“She’s been a major contributor to our program all four years she has been here,” Ramsey said. “This year was her chance and time to step up as our one, and only, senior and (her leadership) has been a tremendous area of growth.”

“(Woods) will go down as not only a great player for Ashland, but all the way around in the classroom, on the court, in her leadership as one of our top players.”

The Eagles’ latest game was Monday against Lake Erie (8-12). AU came away with a 76-43 victory.

AU will try to match their longest winning streak of the season, seven, Thursday at home against Walsh (14-7) at 5:30.
