Ice skating in Redwood

Matt Erickson

Advertised as Indoor Ice Skating, the Campus Activities Board had many people wondering what was going to happen in Redwood this past Friday night.

Numerous students were musing how exactly CAB was going to pull of this particular event. As the fourth event hosted by CAB this semester, there was a definite air of expectation. The Collegian and its staff were just as curious as the rest of the campus.

The event was originally discovered by a group of CAB members.

Each year a select group of their organization attends a conference hosted by the National Association for Campus Activities.

While there, they saw the indoor ice skating event advertised.

A company called SuperGames based out of Worthington was the able to make it happen. As with all events held by CAB, the organization voted on the idea and agreed to bring it to campus.  While advertised as Indoor Ice Skating, the event could possibly have been named Iceless Ice Skating.

In fact the only ice in all of Redwood was found in the water coolers outside of the skating rink.

Just as a magician never reveals his secrets SuperGames takes the same mentality with how the rink is actually created.

That being said, the floor of the rink was indeed slick enough for skaters to slide around. The skates however were pretty dull.

They were sharp enough to grip the surface but not sharp enough to truly allow skaters to push off.

In reality it felt more like walking and sliding than ice skating but still, the event was a lot of fun. Kacey Kovac, a member of CAB, said “I think that the event had a huge turnout. The event definitely brought in tons of people, some that had never skated before.”

What really made the event so memorable was the atmosphere of the room.

This particular factor is one that CAB has done a fantastic job with thus far this semester.

There was a s’mores bar as well as hot chocolate for attendees to enjoy while they were off the “ice.” Kovac said, “I think that the s’mores bar was a huge success because we had tons of different types of chocolate, like the Ghirardelli chocolate caramel squares!”

With strands of lights across the room as well as from the ceiling Redwood had a truly inviting glow.

Mix that with the fires for the s’mores and it created a fun and warm atmosphere.

After this performance by CAB there are some high expectations set for the rest of the year.
