Emotions were flying high with a few Ashland players and coaches having tears in their eyes, and that was before the game got started.

It was senior day and it was the last regular season home game for senior Taylor Woods and head coach Sue Ramsey.

“We have been through a lot together,” Ramsey said. “The four years I’ve coached her and the special year we’ve had together knowing with was our last year here. Today was a day when our team could truly honor (Woods), and I know the girls were playing a little extra for her.”

She was also emotional because one of her players, junior Mckenzie Miller, sang the National Anthem before the game.

“Whenever one of our players, it used to be Lindsay Tenyak and now it’s Mckenzie Miller, sings the national anthem, it goes right to my heart.”

There was still a game to be played. The Eagles would win that game against Tiffin 81-47 with the leading scorer being, who else, but Woods with 20 points.

Woods scored the first points of the game with a three pointer six seconds into the game and caused the crowd to erupt. She would finish 6-12 from behind the arc.

“I am just very humbled to have played for this program,” Woods said. “This is the best program in the world.”

Woods has had a remarkable career for AU and has multiple accomplishments, including having made the most 3-point shots in Eagles history, but she only cares about winning.

“I try not to worry about records,” said Woods. “I just play and I’m trying to win, our team is trying to win.”

When Woods was taken out of the game for good, the Ashland crowd made sure to give her a huge applause to thank her for all she has done in her career.

Many Ashland players had big games including Andi Daugherty, who had nine points, 12 rebounds and five blocks. Laina Snyder scored 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds, and Rachelle Morrison scored 12 points to go along with three assists.

“It was a great team win and we had a lot of contributions from a lot of people,” Ramsey said.

For the Dragons, sophomores Bre Nauman and Anya Misko were the main contributors. Nauman had 13 points and Misko grabbed eight rebounds.

Another thing that AU did well was their ability to create turnovers, while still keeping care of the ball themselves. They created 23 turnovers and coughed up the ball only 11 times.

One thing that Ramsey is especially proud of seeing from the team is how close they have become.

“This is a very tight knit group,” she said. “They’re willing to sacrifice off the court, so that when we come together on the court they’ll do everything they are called upon to do.”

The last regular season game for the Eagles will be on the road Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Lake Eerie. AU has already clinched a spot in the GLIAC tournament, so they will play more basketball after Thursday.

The Eagles are currently sitting in the third seed position, and stand a good chance of hosting a first-round GLIAC Tournament game. They are also currently ranked No. 7 in the Midwest Region. The top eight teams in the region make the NCAA Tournament.
